Scott Savol from American Idol

Getting to Know Scott
-Where were you born? And where do you reside now?
I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Now I reside in Nashville, Tennessee

-When did you know that you wanted to be a singer?
When I was 15, and Boyz II Men’s first album dropped. When I heard it, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

-Aside from singing, you love to…?
I love to write, and be in the studio learning to produce. I also love spendind time with family and friends.

-Who are you inspired by?
My biggest inspiration is Jesus Christ. He showed me that it is never about you, but who you can reach is the utmost importance. Saving lives for the Kingdom

-What’s something people might not expect from you?
I am a nice guy, contrary to what most people would believe. And I am funny as I don’t know what.

Music
-How long have you been singing?
Since before I can remember. I was told that I have been singing as long as I have been talking.
-Prior to your appearance on American Idol Season 4 you were?
Prior to that I was singing at church and working as a security officer.

-Describe your experience on American Idol?
It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. To be able to do what I love to do on that level, in front of millions of people a week, it was awesome. Plus I got to live in Los Angeles for a couple months. That was really exciting. Then, to top it off, I got to tour the country for 2 months.

-What did you gain from your experience on there?
To know what you do. Let nothing sidetrack you. Be sure of YOU no matter what circumstances come your way. Believe in yourself and all that you do.

-Who are some people that you will like to collaborate with in the future?
Would have loved to collaborate with Luther Vandross. R.I.P. I would love to collaborate with Boyz II Men. That would be the ultimate for me.

-What does your music bring to the table?
Positivity, and an assurance that there still are values running through the blood of creative people in the music industry. I don’t care about buying some random girl a drink at the club. I want to show woman that they are worth more, and should be treated as such. And these dudes out here need to learn a little more respect for a woman who has the power to create a life. Respect is all I’m asking for anyone to demand, or give.

-Your favorite song to perform?
Too many to name. I still love to perform “Against all Odds”.

-If you wasn’t singing you would be…?
Don’t wanna think about that. I love singing to much to imagine life without it.
Issues
-How can we change the industry, being that we are future role models?
Express positivity in everything that we do. Express our values and our morals. Don’t cop out to doing something to make money when it goes against what you believe. Sand uo for what you believe. You can do more on your feet than on your . . . you know what I mean.

Future
-What does the future hold for you?
In the studio recording an album now with a producer friend of mine by the name of Will Smith. No, not “Get Jiggy with It”. This Will Smith plays the keys like it ain’t nobody’s business. Blees him.

-What’s up and coming for you?
Whatever God sends me to do. Some performances in the near future, and the album that has been waited on by millions around the world. It’s on the way.

-Advice for upcoming singers.
Believe in you and do you. Don’t let anybody tell you no. You only fail by giving up. Keep God first, and all that is second will be a Blessing.
-Any Shoutouts?
Shout out to you Jazzy, for doin this. Much love to you. Shout out to all my people in Cleveland, Ohio and Nashville, Tennessee. My famiy and friends. And I just thank God for the status He has placed upon me. I welcome it with an open heart. Much love.

Q: Being that we are “role models”, what can we do to make the industry more positive for our youth?

“DA LONE STAR KID”

Spark Dawg
~Mrs. Jaszy

Da Lone Star Kid, better known as Spark Dawg, is definately putting Killeen,TX on the map. Killeen,TX?! "I am the scene…In my opinion me, Team Spark-A-Lot & Greencity are faces of this whole Central Texas movement. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely alotta talent all through Waco, Belton, Temple, Copperas Cove & Austin, but if definitely feels good knowin WE’RE the ones that kicked this door down & brought some type of NATIONAL exposure to the Killeen scene fasho."

At the age of 20 something he considers hisself an "O.G". I introduce to some and present to others the "Lone Star Kid", Spark Dawg....

About Spark Dawg/Hobbies

-What is your age?
@ 20 sumthin years old I’ma O.G.

-Where were you born?
My mother’s actually from Central America…Panama to be exact. My biological father was in the military & got stationed in Ft. Clayton Army Base. That’s where he met my mother, got married & I was born on the military base & we moved to Killeen, TX soon after.

-Where did you get the name “Spark Dawg”?
I use to make & sell “Gold Grillz” back in high school so everybody started callin me “Sparky.” Once I got older, I dropped the “Y” & just went by “Spark.” Once I started takin rap seriously I added the “Dawg” because I thought it sounded “cool” @ the time plus I’ve actually owned a few pit bulls in my life so I’ve always had an interest in dogs period ya dig?

-After doing shows and being in the studio, you like to…?
Go back to my hotel room, light a DRO sweet & critique footage from the show. I’m my biggest critic so I like to go back & watch my performance footage to point out ways to improve it.

-Favorite TV show?
Right now prolly “1st 48” (besides Rap City of course)

Hometown

-Describe the rap scene back home.
I am the scene…In my opinion me, Team Spark-A-Lot & Greencity are faces of this whole Central Texas movement. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely alotta talent all through Waco, Belton, Temple, Copperas Cove & Austin, but if definitely feels good knowin WE’RE the ones that kicked this door down & brought some type of NATIONAL exposure to the Killeen scene fasho.

-What makes your hometown unique?
The fact that we’re right in the middle of the 2 biggest music cities in our state. We have Dallas right above us & Houston right below us. We’re the part of Texas that the whole world really hasn’t been exposed to but July 15th Scarface presents Greencity “Brand New Money” & that’ll all changed fasho!

-Do you see yourself living there forever, or eventually moving?
I actually have a spot in H-town & a spot in D-town when I’m out on the road but my primary location @ the moment is my hometown of Killeen, TX. I actually JUST moved into a 3 bedroom house with a built in studio ran by my homie Dyce & The Blessin…We makin moves out here ya dig?

Music

-How long have you been rapping?
I prolly wrote my 1st real flow around the age of 13 but I actually took the rappin thang serious around 99 or 2000 if I’m not mistaken.

-Who inspires you?
LIFE in general inspires me. But as far as other artists, I like Bun B, Ludacris, Fabolous…Everybody likes Jay, Big & Pac…& Weezy killin da game right now. There’s alotta different shit I draw inspiration from, like the fact that my mom is in her 50’s & still works a 9 to 5…I wanna be able to help my mother retire so she can enjoy the rest of her life. MY MOTHER, that’s what inspires me ya dig?

-Without music, you could see yourself…?
Being a PORN STAR lol real talk (I’ve been practicing lol)

-What does your music being to the table?
A breath of fresh air…Quote me on this “There’s NO other rapper from Texas makin the kind of records I choose to make. I’m in my own lane & that’s why I feel like I’m winning.” I’m not out here tryna prove that I’m the toughest dude on the planet but I’m a MAN so if you disrespect me I’ma come see you. But other than that, I’m just a young fly nigga with some ole’ school ways tryna make my momma proud. That’s all…

-Describe your dream collaboration.
Me, Pac & Biggie woulda been an ill collab cuz you got Pac holdin it down for the West, Biggie holdin it down for the East, & ME Spark aka SparkDawg holdin it down for the South fasho…That would be the illest record of all time! lol

-Who do you feel is your competition, if anyone?
I’m my own competition. alotta rappers are good for they’re own unique reasons. I feel like nobody can do what I do better than me so I don’t really waste time comparing myself to any other artists. In MY mind I’m thee BEST RAPPER EVER & I feel like every real rapper should feel the same.

-Favorite song to perform?
I usually start alotta shows off with “Swung & Swang.” That gets the crowd hype automatically. If they’re alotta ladies in the crowd I like to do “Big Meat” lol “Pour It On Da Modelz” is definitely a fan favorite when I’m on stage.

-Where did you get the concept for your song “Pour It On Da Modelz?
Actually 1 of my in-house producers Tha Francize came up with the concept. He sent me the beat & the rest was history ya dig? Shout out to my homie Coota Bang from Swishahouse for jumpin on the remix.

Future

-What’s next?
After the Greencity album drops, I’ma immediately drop my indy underground album called “Welcome 2 Killeen” (Small City Big Thangz) & follow up with my MAJOR label album “DA LONE STAR KID.”

-Advice to up and coming artists?
KEEP GOD 1ST & EVERYTHANG ELSE WILL WORK OUT

-Any Shoutouts?
Shout out my mother & family for believing in my God given talent, my Greencity fam, Team Spark-A-Lot, the city of Killeen for raising me, all the fans & supporters of my music & any DJ that ever played a song of mine….o yea I also wanna thank Soundclick & Myspace for makin me famous www.myspace.com/DaLoneStarKid

I met him at a hotel and was like I got a hot record that I need you on. He was like “that’s whats up, I respect your grind. I don’t see that often with R&B artists.” He heard the track and he immediately agreed to get on it. We chopped up the business end and got it poppin’.

Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Ciara, Alicia Keys, Linkin’ Park, Brandy, R Kelly, The Dream, and a LONG list of others.

Variety. It takes all styles of R&B and roles them in to one.

-If you wasn’t rapping you would be…?
Well, I’m a singer. Lol but if I wasn’t singing I’d be writing for other artists….something dealing with music. I can’t work a 9 to 5.

Issues
-How can we change the industry, being that we are future role models?
Cleaner music….crafty lyrics, but clean content.

-Your thoughts on the election?
OBAMA!!!

-How do you feel about the Sean Bell situation?
It shows that racism still exists.

-Do you ever think that you’ll be in love with a stripper?

Who Is Cashville's Prince?!?

Cash Money Records
Own
All Star
~Mrs. Jaszy

If you haven't heard of him, let me be the first to introduce him to you. He goes by the name of All Star, also known as Cashville's Prince. The 23 year-old,born Jermaine Shute, grew up mainly in East Nashville. From selling his mixtapes,to getting a major record deal with New Orleans label,Cash Money Records, he definately knows what it means to "Grind Hard."

So without further or do, my interview with Mr. Grind Hard himself...

When did you start rapping?
As a hobby in 1999 or 2000. At 14 or 15 years old. Seriously around 2002 as I entered college, and professionally in late ‘03/early ‘04
Growing up who were some of your influences?
My Mother, My Uncles, My Grandmother, Family essentially. I had a few teachers along the way that kept me from throwing my life away early. Sports and music occupied enough of my childhood without being personal to artists or athletes as idols.
Describe your very first performance.
It was amazing. One of my fondest memories of my “career”. It was a talent show in the Forum at TSU where I was a student. I was in a group with my best friend, Firi Matthews (Lord Rest his Soul). After only weeks of being in school we had an auditorium full of people feeling it. I have fans to this day that were there and remember it as a great show. It made me a believer in my own ability. As much as confidence is prevalent in hip hop, or as cocky or brash as my lyrics might have been even back then, no ego trip can compare to peer approval.
How did you and Yo Gotti meet?
I had released my 2nd mixtape, and my buzz had grown strong in the streets of Nashville. As it spread, Gotti would end up hearing my name and eventually my music in his barber shop. He heard some things that caught his ear, got the disc and called the number. Me being the business and talent of my situation at the time, had my number on the disc. We chopped it up over the phone, then met in Nashville a few weeks later at a show of his. About a week later he came back to Nashville to do a song with me, and from there the business got handled, a deal got structured, we’ve made a lot of money and seen the world together. The rest is history, I can’t complain.
Who would you compare yourself to, if anyone?
Personally, no one. I am ONE OF A KIND ME. Musically I stray from comparison because there’s too much competitive energy in this world. I’m Sheila’s Shining Star (Hi Mom!). Her only and therefore that couldn’t be another like me.
Describe your style.
Unique, Introspective, sporadic, and often times inanimate
What sets you aside from any rappers today?
I’m not too much focused or stuck on other rappers. Nothing negative to that just simply, I see a lot of rappers focus there efforts and attention on other rappers situations, rather than their own. Likewise I view what I do as a gift, understanding that if I don’t make it I leave so many people I care for in harm’s way or in the same cycle that plagues every hood.
Where did you get the concept for your song A-Z?
Sesame Street and some well mixed drinks while in Miami Beach, Florida. I was in my hotel room enjoying the atmosphere and was writing a rhyme in my mind, and I kept saying, “Ay (A) I ain’t the n***a you wanna be (B),/ ‘cause you don’t understand what you can’t see (C).” I thought it was a cool bar with the whole ABC thing and thought ‘I wonder if I could write a verse going all the way through the alphabet. I found the beat in my email when I got back home and went in. It was bigger than I ever imagined it. Just like “Grey Goose”. It was just accepted. I love that about my music that my personality in the form of records work….With “Alphabet Soup” (the sequel to “A to Z”) I went backwards and it was just a challenge. After seeing crowds of people recite the first version a capella, I found a beat that just made my brain lock in and it made sense. Those stories are real. Check them out at www.grindhardonline.com or on myspace.com/gotogrindonlinecom
How did the deal with Cash Money come about?
I was rocking wit Gotti tough on a street level and just as homeboys. He had a group “Block Burnaz” that he was closing a deal with Cash Money. I rode to New Orleans with him just on GP and when he was turning in their music he had accidentally burned one of my songs on the end of the disc. Slim and Stunna heard the one song and was like “Who dat? We want to sign him!” For the Record: THAT SONG WAS NOT GREY GOOSE. They met me, and did there research. They used to get down in Nashville back in the day, so they knew I was certified, and the talent spoke for itself. It was a winning situation for me, especially considering the 15-20 other major label offers I had received at the time.
Who would you say is a up and coming rapper?
Mike J, Kush, QT, Gene and Sleezy…GRIND HARD!!! What else I’m supposed to say. I don’t have room to focus on much else than situations I’m directly involved with. Yo Gotti is entering “household name” mode. And All Star is back in his 2-3 zone (wit a sheepish grin)
What is your opinion about Superhead? Do you feel she wrote her book as more of a publicity stunt?
I don’t know her to know her intentions, but I know that book, stunt or not, affected people’s personal and family lives beyond entertainment. I only object because I feel that with the press and attention her situation received it only adds to the common perception as blacks with the minstrel show persona. Blacks generate more headlines, attention, and notoriety for negativity. For instance rapper T.I. had community outreach efforts prior to his case. He gave a lot of money to the Hurricane Katrina cause, but he will get a reality show for the court-mandated community service time. It takes for you to commit a federal crime for a network to deem your day to day life interesting enough to document. Personally I would have been more entertained by a show based around his day to day life as a rapper/exec.

To answer the question more directly, she just capitalized. I’m just all about damage control, and I don’t think telling the world of your sex life with the who’s who of entertainment was a form of therapy. It was to me an attempt to sell a book. A successful one.

Aside from rapping, you could see yourself?
Operating a multimedia management company...A one stop shop for an independent to straighten what’s rough or unknown. This business is vast, and I’ve learned that there’s so much value beyond the vocal booth.
How do you want to be remembered?
I would prefer to be loved, but I would settle for appreciated for effort, activity, and consistency
Who would you say is running the rap game right now?
The World Wide Web
Would you consider yourself as an overachiever?
No, my standards for myself are so high that I never think I have done enough.
When you’re not doing shows and in the studio, you like to?
Study the market from different perspectives. Bowl, Play Basketball, play Video Games, travel…etc.
A lot of people have been wearing jerseys; do you think jerseys are back in?
I don’t know, I haven’t noticed. I went so hard from ‘02 til around Jay-Z’s “Black Album” with the Throwback and Authentic Jersey phase that I vowed to start a trend fashion wise before I spend some thousands of dollars following that trend. I want a Jackie Moon jersey though. I could probably get away with the jersey thing though with the whole “All Star” marketing thing. I’m GRIND HARD down daily though. New apparel available via www.grindhardonline.com
You couldn’t live without?
MY MOTHER, NEW SOCKS.
Describe yourself in one word.
EDGY
Name one place you haven’t traveled to that you would like to :
The Eastern Caribbean
Did you expect your hit single “Grey Goose” to get as many plays as it did?
I didn’t merely because I never recorded thinking this is the “one”. Especially then I was just making music with limited direction.
Do you think that hip-hop today has a major impact on the youth? (As far as gang violence, having sex, etc.)
No more than an other entertainment/media source. Ultimate fighting was on network television. The highest selling debuting video game (Grand Theft Auto IV) perpetuates all these same issues and their demographics almost directly target youth. Not playing the blame game, but the world with all its free information is bound to have its share of corruption.
What are your thoughts on the Election?
I’m reading Obama’s book “Audacity of Hope” And he has my vote. I’m really trying to be actively involved with a voting drive and all on my calendar.
Who are some artists you would like to collab with in the future?

I haven’t given it much thought. Collaborations in rap are overrated, and often forced or fake. I’d prefer to work with people with similar backgrounds/lifestyles.
What can we expect from you in 2008?(upcoming mixtapes, shows, etc.)
-All Star-“Cash Money Laundering”
-
All Star & Young Buck “$tarBuck’s”
-
Grind Hard- A.T.M. (Addicted to Money)
-

-

What advice would you give to upcoming rappers?
