All Star
~Mrs. Jaszy
If you haven't heard of him, let me be the first to introduce him to you. He goes by the name of All Star, also known as Cashville's Prince. The 23 year-old,born Jermaine Shute, grew up mainly in East Nashville. From selling his mixtapes,to getting a major record deal with New Orleans label,Cash Money Records, he definately knows what it means to "Grind Hard."
So without further or do, my interview with Mr. Grind Hard himself...
When did you start rapping?
As a hobby in 1999 or 2000. At 14 or 15 years old. Seriously around 2002 as I entered college, and professionally in late ‘03/early ‘04
Growing up who were some of your influences?
My Mother, My Uncles, My Grandmother, Family essentially. I had a few teachers along the way that kept me from throwing my life away early. Sports and music occupied enough of my childhood without being personal to artists or athletes as idols.
Describe your very first performance.
It was amazing. One of my fondest memories of my “career”. It was a talent show in the Forum at TSU where I was a student. I was in a group with my best friend, Firi Matthews (Lord Rest his Soul). After only weeks of being in school we had an auditorium full of people feeling it. I have fans to this day that were there and remember it as a great show. It made me a believer in my own ability. As much as confidence is prevalent in hip hop, or as cocky or brash as my lyrics might have been even back then, no ego trip can compare to peer approval.
How did you and Yo Gotti meet?
I had released my 2nd mixtape, and my buzz had grown strong in the streets of Nashville. As it spread, Gotti would end up hearing my name and eventually my music in his barber shop. He heard some things that caught his ear, got the disc and called the number. Me being the business and talent of my situation at the time, had my number on the disc. We chopped it up over the phone, then met in Nashville a few weeks later at a show of his. About a week later he came back to Nashville to do a song with me, and from there the business got handled, a deal got structured, we’ve made a lot of money and seen the world together. The rest is history, I can’t complain.
Who would you compare yourself to, if anyone?
Personally, no one. I am ONE OF A KIND ME. Musically I stray from comparison because there’s too much competitive energy in this world. I’m Sheila’s Shining Star (Hi Mom!). Her only and therefore that couldn’t be another like me.
Describe your style.
Unique, Introspective, sporadic, and often times inanimate
What sets you aside from any rappers today?
I’m not too much focused or stuck on other rappers. Nothing negative to that just simply, I see a lot of rappers focus there efforts and attention on other rappers situations, rather than their own. Likewise I view what I do as a gift, understanding that if I don’t make it I leave so many people I care for in harm’s way or in the same cycle that plagues every hood.
Where did you get the concept for your song A-Z?
Sesame Street and some well mixed drinks while in Miami Beach, Florida. I was in my hotel room enjoying the atmosphere and was writing a rhyme in my mind, and I kept saying, “Ay (A) I ain’t the n***a you wanna be (B),/ ‘cause you don’t understand what you can’t see (C).” I thought it was a cool bar with the whole ABC thing and thought ‘I wonder if I could write a verse going all the way through the alphabet. I found the beat in my email when I got back home and went in. It was bigger than I ever imagined it. Just like “Grey Goose”. It was just accepted. I love that about my music that my personality in the form of records work….With “Alphabet Soup” (the sequel to “A to Z”) I went backwards and it was just a challenge. After seeing crowds of people recite the first version a capella, I found a beat that just made my brain lock in and it made sense. Those stories are real. How did the deal with Cash Money come about?
I was rocking wit Gotti tough on a street level and just as homeboys. He had a group “Block Burnaz” that he was closing a deal with Cash Money. I rode to New Orleans with him just on GP and when he was turning in their music he had accidentally burned one of my songs on the end of the disc. Slim and Stunna heard the one song and was like “Who dat? We want to sign him!” For the Record: THAT SONG WAS NOT GREY GOOSE. They met me, and did there research. They used to get down in Nashville back in the day, so they knew I was certified, and the talent spoke for itself. It was a winning situation for me, especially considering the 15-20 other major label offers I had received at the time.
Who would you say is a up and coming rapper?
Mike J, Kush, QT, Gene and Sleezy…GRIND HARD!!! What else I’m supposed to say. I don’t have room to focus on much else than situations I’m directly involved with. Yo Gotti is entering “household name” mode. And All Star is back in his 2-3 zone (wit a sheepish grin)
What is your opinion about Superhead? Do you feel she wrote her book as more of a publicity stunt?
I don’t know her to know her intentions, but I know that book, stunt or not, affected people’s personal and family lives beyond entertainment. I only object because I feel that with the press and attention her situation received it only adds to the common perception as blacks with the minstrel show persona. Blacks generate more headlines, attention, and notoriety for negativity. For instance rapper T.I. had community outreach efforts prior to his case. He gave a lot of money to the Hurricane Katrina cause, but he will get a reality show for the court-mandated community service time. It takes for you to commit a federal crime for a network to deem your day to day life interesting enough to document. Personally I would have been more entertained by a show based around his day to day life as a rapper/exec.
To answer the question more directly, she just capitalized. I’m just all about damage control, and I don’t think telling the world of your sex life with the who’s who of entertainment was a form of therapy. It was to me an attempt to sell a book. A successful one.
Aside from rapping, you could see yourself?
Operating a multimedia management company...A one stop shop for an independent to straighten what’s rough or unknown. This business is vast, and I’ve learned that there’s so much value beyond the vocal booth.
How do you want to be remembered?
I would prefer to be loved, but I would settle for appreciated for effort, activity, and consistency
Who would you say is running the rap game right now?
The World Wide Web
Would you consider yourself as an overachiever?
No, my standards for myself are so high that I never think I have done enough.
When you’re not doing shows and in the studio, you like to?
Study the market from different perspectives. Bowl, Play Basketball, play Video Games, travel…etc.
A lot of people have been wearing jerseys; do you think jerseys are back in?
I don’t know, I haven’t noticed. I went so hard from ‘02 til around Jay-Z’s “Black Album” with the Throwback and Authentic Jersey phase that I vowed to start a trend fashion wise before I spend some thousands of dollars following that trend. I want a Jackie Moon jersey though. I could probably get away with the jersey thing though with the whole “All Star” marketing thing. I’m GRIND HARD down daily though. New apparel available via www.grindhardonline.com
You couldn’t live without?
MY MOTHER, NEW SOCKS.
Describe yourself in one word.
EDGY
Name one place you haven’t traveled to that you would like to :
The Eastern Caribbean
Did you expect your hit single “Grey Goose” to get as many plays as it did?
I didn’t merely because I never recorded thinking this is the “one”. Especially then I was just making music with limited direction.
Do you think that hip-hop today has a major impact on the youth? (As far as gang violence, having sex, etc.)
No more than an other entertainment/media source. Ultimate fighting was on network television. The highest selling debuting video game (Grand Theft Auto IV) perpetuates all these same issues and their demographics almost directly target youth. Not playing the blame game, but the world with all its free information is bound to have its share of corruption.
What are your thoughts on the Election?
I’m reading Obama’s book “Audacity of Hope” And he has my vote. I’m really trying to be actively involved with a voting drive and all on my calendar.
Who are some artists you would like to collab with in the future?
I haven’t given it much thought. Collaborations in rap are overrated, and often forced or fake. I’d prefer to work with people with similar backgrounds/lifestyles.
What can we expect from you in 2008?(upcoming mixtapes, shows, etc.)
